Nor was this the end of "corps" in English; in recent times it was once more taken into the language, this time with the restricted meaning of a military body of men.
The English language, like all other languages, is a harmony wherein word and meaning are perpetually ringing the changes on one another. How many meanings may the simple word "sad" have for us? It summons up visions of "sorrow," "gloom," "tragedy," "despair," or perhaps only of sober colouring. Again through all the words "charity," "friendship," "affection," "passion," "tenderness," "devotion," "amours," "lust," there quivers the one meaning of "love." The key of this wide harmony is, that each word in the language has one fundamental meaning that cannot be expressed so well by any other word. Mere ephemeral writers have found in synonyms only a means to disguise their one poor thought in a dozen inadequate words; a means, in short, towards that most loathsome of literary vices, "elegant variety." But the secret of great writing is to know one's own thought and to find the right and only word wherewith to express it. Sometimes this art is attained simply by instinct, as, for instance, when Herrick wrote - "Bid me to live, and I will live Thy Protestant to be." In these lines "Protestant" is used in a sense that it never had before and has never had since, and yet what other word could we look for from the context and the rhythm?
